Dr. Hayé Remmelink (1955) studied dentistry between 1974 and 1980 at the University of Groningen (the Netherlands) and received his postgraduate orthodontic training from 1980 to 1984. In 1985 he obtained a PhD from the University of Groningen. His PhD thesis ‘The postnatal development of the human maxillary sutural surfaces’ has been recognized by the American Association of Orthodontists best publication of the year ‘Milo Hellman Research Award’ in 1986.
Since 1985 he maintains a private practice as orthodontist in Almelo, the Netherlands. His major areas of interest are cleft lip and palate and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). In 1987 he started pioneering work on the treatment of OSAS with mandibular repositioning appliances (MRAs) and wrote the first Dutch publication on this topic. In 1989 he introduced the first MRA in the Netherlands. Today these appliances belong to one of the most commonly used treatment modalities for OSAS in the Netherlands.
Among other dr. Remmelink has been secretary of the Dutch Association for Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies, president of the Dutch Association of Orthodontists, co-founder and past secretary of the Dutch Society of Dental Sleep Medicine, president of the European Begg Society of Orthodontics, staff member of the Department of Orthodontics of the University Medical Center Groningen, and member of working groups on Dutch national guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of OSAS in adults and children. He is president of the Booy Foundation, a Dutch organization for postgraduate orthodontic education.
Dr. Remmelink has published numerous articles in national and international journals and given many presentations at congresses, including ‘keynote lectures’ as invited speaker. He received a number of awards including the best 5-year paper by the Dutch Association of Orthodontists and is honorary member of the Dutch Society of Dental Sleep Medicine.
Furthermore, dr. Remmelink is or has been a reviewer of national and international journals and an active member of many committees and work groups in the field of health care. He is member of many national and international scientific societies and professional organizations and serves as moderator at courses and congresses.
Hayé Remmelink is married and has three daughters.
